Introduction to the Starter Deck League

The VARZ Starter Deck League is an open online play program where the community helps us improve the six official Starter Decks.

You do not need to build a deck or have competitive experience. Choose an official Starter Deck, play through Tabletop Simulator, record the result, and tell us how the match felt.

Every match helps us understand VARZ more clearly—and helps us make the first experience of each color better before release.

Why We Are Running the Starter Deck League

The league has two main purposes.

1. Improve the Starter Decks Together

The Starter Decks are the first way many players will experience VARZ.

We want every deck to communicate its color’s identity, provide meaningful decisions, and create enjoyable matches against the other five colors. To do that, we need real match data from players with different levels of TCG experience.

Your games help us evaluate:

  • The win rate of each Starter Deck
  • Matchups that feel too favorable or too difficult
  • Cards that feel too strong, too weak, or unclear
  • Whether each deck has enough ways to recover from a bad position
  • Whether the deck’s intended strategy is understandable during play
  • The overall length, tension, and enjoyment of each matchup
A win or loss is useful data. A short comment about what happened is even more valuable.

2. Learn VARZ and Understand All Six Colors

The Starter Deck League is also designed as a learning path.

By playing different colors, you can experience how the same hex battlefield changes depending on the deck:

  • Red creates immediate pressure and explosive attack turns
  • Blue controls tempo, Sync states, and the opponent’s options
  • Green develops stronger formations over time
  • Purple turns Drops, sacrifice, and Life pressure into advantage
  • Yellow protects Portals and uses the Ruins to recover
  • Silver changes positions and rewrites the battlefield
Playing all six colors makes it easier to understand opposing strategies, identify dangerous cards, and build your own deck later.

Play All Six Colors and Receive a Promotional Card

Kickstarter backers who complete at least one recorded match with each of the six official Starter Deck colors will receive an exclusive VARZ promotional card.

The promotional card will be included with the eligible backer’s Kickstarter shipment.

  • You do not need to win the six matches
  • One completed match with each color counts toward completion
  • Only matches played with the official, unmodified Starter Decks count
  • Match results must be recorded through the supported league system
  • Please use the same Discord-connected VARZ account throughout the league so your progress can be verified
This reward is based on exploring all six colors and helping us collect useful play data—not on your final win rate.

Details about reward confirmation and fulfillment will be announced before Kickstarter shipping.

League Guidelines

  • Use only the current official Starter Deck lists
  • Do not add, remove, or replace cards in a Starter Deck
  • You may play any number of matches
  • You may use the same color repeatedly or change colors between matches
  • Both wins and losses count as completed matches
  • Players of every experience level are welcome
  • The Starter Decks, rules, and card text may be adjusted as test data is collected
  • Follow the latest official website, TTS, and Discord announcements when an update is released

What Kind of Feedback Is Helpful?

You do not need to write a detailed report. Useful feedback includes comments such as:

  • “I understood what this deck wanted to do immediately.”
  • “I had no way to recover after losing this Portal.”
  • “This card was difficult to understand.”
  • “This matchup felt heavily favored toward one color.”
  • “The match became much more interesting after the Hero moved.”
  • “I wanted another card that supported this strategy.”
Specific moments are especially helpful. Mention the color, card, turn, or battlefield situation when possible.

Beginners Are Welcome

The Starter Deck League is not only for experienced TCG players.

The decks are already constructed, and community members can help with Tabletop Simulator setup, rules questions, and the first match. The goal is not to enter with complete knowledge. The goal is to learn by playing.

Choose one color. Enter the battlefield. Then walk the other five.
