Deck Building Guide

Build your Hero-led deck, manage your VAZ, and import your deck into Tabletop Simulator.

In VARZ TCG, your deck is built around your Hero. Your Hero defines your base color, your Skill Deck, and the strategy you bring to the battlefield.

Build around your Hero, choose your Spils, prepare your Portals, manage your VAZ, and bring your deck directly into Tabletop Simulator using the official VARZ Web Deck Builder.

What You Need

What Makes a VARZ Deck?

A VARZ TCG deck is not just one deck. Each player prepares one Hero and three different decks: a Main Deck, a Portal Deck, and a Skill Deck.

Hero Card

Your Hero is the heart of your strategy. The Hero's color becomes your base color and determines the most stable VAZ available to your deck.

  • 1 Hero Card
  • Defines your base color
  • Defines your playstyle
  • Connects to your Skill strategy

Main Deck

Your Main Deck contains the Spell cards you draw and play during the game. This includes Spils, Commands, and Slashes.

  • 30 Spell Cards
  • Includes Spils, Commands, and Slashes
  • Main source of combat and tactical options

Portal Deck

Your Portal Deck protects your Lands and creates alternate win conditions. Losing all Portals on one Land can cost you the game.

  • 8 Portal Cards
  • Protects your Lands
  • Creates pressure and strategic objectives

Skill Deck

Your Skill Deck supports your Hero's growth and VAZ generation. It is especially important when building multi-color decks.

  • 9 Skill Cards
  • Supports Hero abilities
  • Helps generate and manage VAZ
48 cards total: 1 Hero, 30 Main Deck cards, 8 Portal cards, and 9 Skill cards.
Hero-Led

Start with Your Hero

In VARZ, your Hero is your deck's starting point. Choose your Hero first, then build your Main Deck, Portal Deck, and Skill Deck around that Hero's color, class, and strategy.

Hero Color

Your Hero's color is your most reliable source of VAZ. Skills can naturally generate VAZ that matches your Hero's color.

Hero Strategy

Each Hero pushes your deck toward a different style of play, such as aggressive combat, positioning, control, support, or combo-focused strategies.

Skill Synergy

Your Skill Deck should support what your Hero wants to do. Good Skill choices make your deck more consistent and open up stronger turns.

Multi-Color

Building with Multiple Colors

VARZ allows multi-color deck building, but adding more colors requires careful VAZ management.

1

Your Hero's Color is Your Base

Each Hero has a color. VAZ matching your Hero's color is the easiest and most stable to access.

Example

A Red Hero can reliably use Red VAZ. A Blue Hero can reliably use Blue VAZ.

2

Other Colors Require Setup

If you want to use cards of a different color from your Hero, you need ways to generate that color's VAZ through your Skill Deck.

Example

If you use a Red Hero but want to play Blue cards, you need Blue VAZ in your Skill Deck.

3

Pay Costs with Matching Colors

To play a card, you must spend VAZ that matches that card's color.

Example

A Blue 3-cost Spil requires 3 Blue VAZ.

4

More Colors, More Planning

Adding more colors gives your deck more options, but also makes VAZ management more important. Simple decks are more consistent. Multi-color decks are more flexible but require better planning.

“To use more colors, you need to generate and spend the matching VAZ.”

Step by Step

How to Build Your First Deck

  1. 1

    Choose Your Hero

Pick the Hero you want to build around. Your Hero's color and playstyle will guide the rest of your deck.

  2. 2

    Choose Your Main Strategy

Decide what your deck wants to do. Examples: attack quickly, control the battlefield, protect Portals, build Spil synergy, or win through tactical positioning.

  3. 3

    Build Your Main Deck

Select 30 Spell cards, including Spils, Commands, and Slashes. Make sure your cards support your Hero and your game plan.

  4. 4

    Build Your Portal Deck

Select 8 Portal cards. Portals are not just defenses — they shape the battlefield and create alternate win conditions.

  5. 5

    Build Your Skill Deck

Select 9 Skill cards. Your Skill Deck helps your Hero grow, enables key abilities, and manages your VAZ.

  6. 6

    Check Your VAZ

Make sure your deck can generate the colors of VAZ required to play your cards. If you add off-color cards, confirm that your Skill Deck can support them.

  7. 7

    Test in Tabletop Simulator

Save your deck in the Web Deck Builder, copy the generated Deck ID, and import it into Tabletop Simulator.

Getting Started

New to Deck Building?

If you are new to VARZ TCG, we recommend starting with a single-color deck based on your Hero's color. Once you understand how VAZ works, try adding a second color.

Level 1

Beginner

Start with your Hero's color only. This gives you the most stable VAZ and the easiest learning experience.

Level 2

Intermediate

Add one secondary color. This gives your deck more options while keeping VAZ management understandable.

Level 3

Advanced

Build a multi-color deck with a more complex Skill Deck. This can create powerful combinations, but requires careful planning.
