Story

A Shrine Morning in Akihabara

Above the neon clamor of Akihabara, tucked between electronics towers and anime billboards, stood a small shrine where Akiha Yoka swept the stone path each morning. She was a genius of kyudo, the kind of archer whose stillness made onlookers hold their breath, and that same focus carried into everything she did — even the quiet chore of cleaning the grounds she shared with her grandmother, Hatsu.

Yoka's life was gentle but shadowed. Years ago her parents, Yoichi and Madoka, had vanished without explanation, leaving behind only fragments of a mystery and a few strange cards she did not understand. Hatsu raised her with warmth and never spoke of the cards directly, yet Yoka often felt that the silence around her parents' disappearance hid something she was meant, one day, to find.

The Rumor of the Hidden Cards

That ordinary rhythm broke the morning her childhood friend Otokawa Tomoyo came bounding up the shrine steps, phone already thrust forward. Tomoyo was an urban legend fanatic, and today's obsession was the rumor sweeping the city: mysterious cards hidden in secret spots around Tokyo, said to bring luck, love, and money. Some, she insisted breathlessly, were selling online for staggering sums.

Yoka agreed to come along mostly to keep her friend out of trouble. But as Tomoyo dragged her through the back alleys and landmarks of Akihabara, the playful scavenger hunt began to feel less like a game and more like a trail laid out deliberately, waiting for the right person to follow it. That suspicion sharpened when Yoka found a peculiar charm bearing a QR code that seemed to call to her specifically.

VARZ PRAYERS

Scanning the code activated an app she had never downloaded — VARZ PRAYERS. The screen flared to life and, impossibly, recognized her: not as a new user, but as a player, as though her name had been entered into the system long before this moment. Something in the design felt familiar, tied to the very cards her parents had left behind.

Before Yoka could make sense of it, the hunt turned hostile. Katsurashoin Tamaki, a member of the organization known as Homunculus, had been ordered to secure the same card, and she did not intend to lose it to a shrine girl. Her controlled yokai, the Tawashi Tanuki, snatched the prize and bolted, leading Yoka and Tomoyo on a frantic chase up through the buildings of Akihabara toward a rooftop where the rumor's true nature would finally show itself.

The Rooftop Battle

On the rooftop, the playful treasure hunt collapsed into genuine danger. Tamaki commanded her yokai with cold confidence, and Tomoyo — all enthusiasm and no defense — was suddenly in real peril. Just as the situation tipped toward disaster, a new figure arrived: Shikino Takuto of Public Safety Section 0, accompanied by his loyal shikigami dog, Kamase Ken.

Takuto moved to intercept, his shikigami clashing against Tamaki's tanuki in a contest of summoned spirits that lit the rooftop with uncanny energy. But the fight was fierce, and protecting two civilians while pressing the attack stretched him thin. When Tomoyo was caught in the crossfire, the burden of the moment fell, unexpectedly, on Yoka.

The First Summoning

Something in Yoka answered. Guided by the VARZ PRAYERS app and by the card her family had left her — as though her parents were reaching across their long absence to steady her hand — she drew a steadying breath, the same stillness she found at full draw on the archery range, and scanned the shikigami card.

Light gathered, took shape, and answered her call. For the first time, Yoka summoned Amapie, her shikigami, into the battle. The frightened girl from the shrine was gone; in her place stood someone stepping into a power she was only beginning to understand. The card war over Akihabara had found its newest hero, and Yoka's true story had only just begun.
